The Village of Gwabegar
Population: 150
The Village of Gwabegar is located 139kms South West of Narrabri and is 97kms from Wee Waa. The trip from Wee Waa to Gwabegar takes approximately 1 hour.
When travelling from Wee Waa to Gwabegar a diverse and changing landscape can be enjoyed. The country side on this trip expresses the true essence of Australia- a rapidly changing tapestry of countryside from the mountains to the plains and the dry creeks to the mighty Namoi River. Gwabegar is situated in the heart of the Pilliga State Forest and provides very interesting countryside, with the thick forest of Pine trees filling the loamy flats.
Gwabegar is located in the middle of the largest naturally forming Cypress Pine Forest in the Southern Hemisphere, the Pilliga State Forest, making it a must see destination in the shire. The village of Gwabegar once sported no less than twelve (12) sawmills, one of which remains operational today. Farming and timber 'getting' are the main forms of employment to the residents of Gwabegar.
Due to an abundance of timber, Gwabegar was an integral part of the 'sleeper cutting' process that took place during the creation of a railway across the continent of Australia in the early 1900s. Sleeper cutter camps and Koala colonies are points of interest in the Gwabegar area. The Forestry industry recently shut down in Gwabegar but it still remains a vibrant town.
The village of Gwabegar has a Post Office, Basic Necessity Store, CWA Hall, Multi-purpose Sports Court, visiting Doctor, supported playgroup, Fishing Social Club with all year round activities as well as an active committee of locals who are dedicated to the social and economic progress of the village. Gwabegar has constructed a Community Link Centre which provides an excellent meeting spot for village members.
