Innovations Festival 2006

Last modified: January 16, 2007 - 9:46 AM

Innovations Festival 2006

The Crossing Theatre will again be the venue for the Narrabri Innovation Festival this year and organisers have urged inventors to bring forth their ideas - and problems which need solutions.

Co-ordinator of the Innovation Festival Peter Smith reports that planning of the 2006 event is underway. The Festival is scheduled for May 8 at The Crossing Theatre."We want people to tell us the kinds of issues they would like covered" said Mr. Smith said.

"For example, we are interested in the climate change issue and the opportunities which may arise from climate change. "We want to engage agriculturalists, industry, business and school students in climate change discussion. What will it mean for growing crops in this region?, issues like that."What do people want to hear about? I am open to suggestions as to themes, content and speakers for the Festival."

This will be the fourth Narrabri Innovation Festival which brings together speakers and interested people involved in the commercialisation of inventions, new ideas, processes and products. Previous high profile speakers have included Australia’s Chief Scientist Dr. Robin Batterham, Prof. Martin, head of Australian Centre for Agriculture and Law based at the University of New England, and the marketing ‘guru’ Chris Boesley."We are anticipating a prominent, nationally recognised keynote speaker again this year." Peter   Smith said."And there are several high profile speakers pencilled in."

The annual Innovation Festival draws hundreds of people to The Crossing Theatre "We are in the early stages of planning and are seeking ideas and suggestions for content. What would people like to see?" Mr. Smith said."One of the activities in May will focus on following up ideas presented in earlier years ." There are inventions which have been introduced at previous Festivals and are now in the throes of commercialisation.

"One of these was Mr. Stefan Henngeler’s OH and S management tool software" Mr. Smith said."Another, John Wilkinson’s Rotocult cultivator, is one of the success stories. Mr. Wilkinson recently received $1.3 million from Ausindustry to take his invention to next the step in development."Hopefully we will see more inventions this year than before."

"Some couldn’t be displayed because they weren’t patent protected before.""Over the last three years the Innovation Festival has seen people bring projects through the concept stage and are now moving into protoype stage." There are many spin-offs from the Festival. "TAFE facilitated the drawing and CAD (Computer Aided Design) of a number of inventions and now we have a lot of students coming to learn computer aided drafting course."
