Local Government and General Information
Local Government is one of the 3 tiers of government in Australia, the others being the State Government and the Federal Government.
There are currently 172 Councils in New South Wales.
Each Council is governed by a group of people called Councillors. Councillors are people who are elected directly by the community, and are therefore directly responsible to the local electors.
Some Local Government areas have as few as 5 Councillors and other areas as many as 15 Councillors. In Narrabri Shire we have 12 Councillors.
Councillors are elected for a 4 year term and the current body of Narrabri Shire Councillors were elected in March, 2004. Councillors vote each year for the roles of Mayor and Deputy Mayor. The positions of Mayor and Deputy Mayor last for a term of one year. The Mayoral Election is held at the September Council meeting of each year.
Council meetings are held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, excluding the month of January, in the Council Chambers. The meetings commence at 9.30am and members of the public are welcome to attend. Business Papers, detailing the matters to be discussed at Council meetings, are available for perusal by the public at the Administration Building or any of the Shire's libraries the week prior to each monthly meeting. Business Papers are also available on this website.
An organisation structure and senior management team of 3 members supports the Council. The organisation is centred around 3 divisions, logically arranged to carry out the principal activities of the organisation. For more information please refer to the senior management section of this website.
