Local Government is one of the 3 tiers of government in Australia, the others being the State Government and the Federal Government. Each Council is governed by a group of elected members called Councillors. Councillors are elected directly by the community, and are therefore directly responsible to the local electors. Narrabri Shire Council has 12 elected members.
Councillors are elected for a 4 year term and the current body of Narrabri Shire Councillors were elected in March, 2004. The next Local Government elections will be held in September 2008.
Councillors vote each year for the roles of Mayor and Deputy Mayor. The positions of Mayor and Deputy Mayor last for a term of one year. The Mayoral Election is held at the September Council meeting of each year.
Council meetings are held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, excluding the month of January, in the Council Chambers. The meetings commence at 9.30am and members of the public are welcome to attend. Business Papers, detailing the matters to be discussed at Council meetings, are available for perusal by the public at the Administration Building or any of the Shire's libraries the week prior to each monthly meeting. Business Papers are also available on this website.
On the first Tuesday of every month (not including January) Committee Meetings are held. Committees are Roads and Fleet, Finance and Governance, Planning and Development and Public Infrastructure and Community Facilities. The Committee Meetings are used to discuss issues more in depth before making a final decision at the Council meeting.
Narrabri Shire Council has an organisational structure and senior management team of 3 members. The organisation is centred around 3 divisions, logically arranged to carry out the principal activities of the organisation.
