Wee Waa is the “Cotton Capital of Australia” and was the first area in the country to grow commercial quantities of cotton. it remains one of Australia’s leading cotton Producing areas yielding on average 18% of National Production annually. In April each year the landscape surrounding the town is transformed into snowy fields as cotton bolls open in readiness for Picking.
But, there is more to Wee Waa than just cotton!
Wee Waa has a busy and beautifully landscaped main street with unique boutique shops to interest all tastes. The Imperial Hotel is a landmark of the Wee Waa main street and was the first three storey hotel built in the New England – North-West.
Wee Waa is the oldest town in the Namoi Valley and the second largest in Narrabri Shire. The town features many historical sites and points of interest which are highlighted on the town heritage walk and the Wee Waa Museum showcases the areas pioneering past.
There are three primary schools in Wee Waa of which two have been newly renovated. There is one high school in Wee Waa. All boast excellent facilities and academic results.
Like the rest of the Shire, Wee Waa is a strong, sport oriented town which has an excellent golf course, swimming pool, indoor multi-purpose courts and numerous walking tracks around the town.
The Wee Waa community is in great hands with a new doctor’s surgery, a Community Hospital and Community Health Centre.
A short drive from Wee Waa on the edge of the Pilliga Scrub is Yarrie Lake, a 3km saucer shaped expanse of water. Its sheltered position makes it an excellent natural bird breeding ground - a mecca for some seventy species of birds. Yarrie Lake is a paradise for camping, bird watching, water skiing, swimming and catching elusive yabbies. Some marvellous sunsets make Yarrie Lake a popular spot for photographers.
