Pilliga

Pilliga is a small country village located on the edge of the Pilliga State Forest in an area abounding with wildlife and natural beauty. The locals often see kangaroos, emus and koalas in the area surrounding the village. Pilliga is approachable from five directions and the main drive from Pilliga to Wee Waa is on sealed road. This scenic road links Pilliga to Narrabri and over the range to connect with coastal roads.

Pilliga has many features that attract tourists. One is the hot artesian bore baths with its therapeutic mineral waters and a new amenities block. People travel great distances to benefit from these mineral rich waters.  The Pilliga Scrub can be a mysterious area and some locals speak of sightings of the Pilliga Yowie!

Pilliga has a small primary school, café, pub, communitylink and rural transaction centre with attached multipurpose courts. The lagoon on the edge of the town is a popular spot for canoeing and birdwatching and attracts a high diversity of bird species including some coastal migratory birds.

Gwabegar

Gwabegar is located in the middle of the largest naturally formed cypress pine forest in the southern hemisphere, The Pilliga State Forest. The village of Gwabegar once sported a thriving forestry industry with no less than twelve sawmills and since the closure of this industry, it remains a quiet and secluded country village.

The trip from Narrabri to Gwabegar is a rapidly changing landscape from the rugged mountain ranges to the sweeping plains and thick forest. Due to the diverse countryside this area is often enjoyed by tourists. Gwabegar has a primary school, modern and well-resourced community centre, a multipurpose sports court, a general store and post office which caters for tourists and residents alike.

Sleeper cutter camps and koala colonies are points of interests in Gwabegar. The area features an abundance of native wildlife and birdlife making it popular with bird watchers due to the plethora of species found in the surrounding forest.
