The villages of Bellata and Edgeroi have a long and proud history in agriculture due to the surrounding rich productive soils. These towns are positioned in the middle of a wheat belt giving the area a bustling energy around harvest and sowing times.
Bellata and Edgeroi form part of the ‘Golden Durum Triangle’, an area well-known for producing some of Australia’s best pasta wheat. The colourful farming land throughout this part of the Shire make this an attractive place to reside.
Bellata is a welcoming town with a primary school for rural families. There is a combined service station, roadhouse and gift shop on the Newell Highway which serves as a popular truck stop and meeting point. Bellata has a nine hole golf course with sand “greens”. For the hobbyist, Bellata is a fossicking area and gems such as agate, petrified wood, jasper and topaz have been found in the area.
Edgeroi is 25km north of Narrabri on the Newell Highway and is a well known locality within the region. The popular fuel shop and general store services locals and the travelling public. A picturesque picnic area, playground and amenities block make this scenic area a great place to stop.
The village of Baan Baa was once a bustling railway village and now remains a primary grain terminal within the Shire. The village is situated in an attractive area with undulating country and magnificent views of the Nandewar Ranges. Baan Baa has a major grain silo strategically located between the Kamilaroi Highway and a railway spur line that accesses the Newcastle port. Mixed farming of wheat, cotton, lamb and cattle have formed the tapestry of the countryside that is Baan Baa.
The Baan Baa village is in close proximity to the rich coal deposits of the new underground mine between Boggabri and Narrabri giving this small village the advantage to thrive. This village is a sociable one and its not hard to strike up a friendly chat with the locals.
The Baan Baa Tennis Club have their courts and clubhouse within the village and hold regular tennis competitions and an annual fundraising ball.
