Health Services and Community Care

Narrabri Shire has an established healthcare infrastructure with an efficient network of support services administered under Hunter New England health. There are hospitals in the three towns of Narrabri, Wee Waa and Boggabri.

The current Narrabri hospital is a thirty-eight bed facility with district level services in obstetrics and surgery featuring a newly refurbished emergency unit. This hospital covers an area as far west as Brewarrina and Lightning Ridge. The already extensive services will be improved in Narrabri with a $42 million project to build a brand new forty-seven bed hospital and combined health service by 2011.

The John Prior Health Service in Boggabri offers a multi-purpose facility including residential aged care, respite service, community health services and an ambulance station. The resident Boggabri doctors work from this facility.

Wee Waa Community Hospital provides a wide range of medical care for the district and outlying areas including minor medical surgical and community health services. This fully accredited hospital has a 24 hour emergency department. Wee Waa also has a Community Health Centre and new doctor’s surgery.

Aged Care Facilities

There are aged care facilities in the three major towns of Narrabri, Boggabri and Wee Waa. These facilities are in close access or adjoining the hospitals or health centres in these towns. These centres offer security and peace of mind for families with ageing relatives.  Some also provide extra services for dementia patients and those who require additional care.

There is an excellent Home and Community Care service for those who wish to remain in their homes and maintain their independence and connection with the community. This group also provide transport for medical patients and the elderly. A motivated group of volunteers run Meals on Wheels in each of the towns with support from the hospitals.

Physiotherapy and Chiropractic Services

Narrabri Shire residents are involved in a lot of physical activity whether it be sports or working outdoors. If you have aches and pains, Narrabri Shire has a number of physiotherapists and chiropractors to help relieve your symptoms as well as masseurs and alternative medicine practitioners.
