Narrabri Shire Council’s Biosecurity Officers will be at the Narrabri Show this Saturday, 3 May 2025 to help residents in identifying and managing invasive weeds.

Recent rainfall has created ideal conditions for a resurgence of invasive weeds across the region, with species such as African Boxthorn, Green Cestrum and various cacti thriving in the wet conditions.

“Now is the perfect time to target African Boxthorn,” said Council's Biosecurity Officer Clare Felton-Taylor. “The recent rain has rejuvenated these hardy plants, making them more vulnerable to control measures like spraying, which are less effective in dry conditions.”

There is also still time to control Green Cestrum before winter frosts set in. Left unchecked, this toxic weed poses a serious threat to livestock and native ecosystems.

“Mother of Millions and cacti are also manageable at the moment,” Ms Felton-Taylor added. “These species can generally be controlled year-round, except during extended droughts, when treatment becomes more difficult.”

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and act now to help protect local landscapes from the spread of these invasive weeds.

“Join us at the Narrabri Show to help keep our community’s green spaces weed free. Together, we can protect our local environment.”

During the Narrabri Show, Council’s Biosecurity Officers will offer hands-on support to tackle invasive weeds. Visitors can:

  • Bring plant samples for expert identification.

  • Explore an informative display on invasive cacti.

  • Report local weed concerns to Biosecurity Officers.

  • Receive a free native plant to promote sustainable gardening and local biodiversity.
