Waste Strategy

In 2023, Narrabri Shire Council adopted the Narrabri Shire Council Waste Strategy – a comprehensive, 20-year plan that sets the direction for responsible waste management and resource recovery across the region.

This Strategy provides a framework for Council to deliver waste services that meet the evolving needs and expectations of our residents while ensuring we meet our environmental obligations. It outlines key actions to reduce waste, recover valuable resources and support the transition to a more circular economy.

Narrabri Shire Council's Vision is:
A sustainable, reliable and affordable waste management system that maximises resource recovery opportunities, for a cleaner and healthier Narrabri Shire.

The Strategy supports the broader goals of the Community Strategic Plan 2017–2027, aligning with the Shire’s social, environmental, economic, and civic priorities. It also contributes to State and Federal waste and sustainability targets.

Waste services are delivered across Narrabri, Boggabri, Wee Waa, and surrounding communities, supported by a network of nine waste management facilities. Council’s efforts are further strengthened through membership in the Northern Inland Regional Waste (NIRW) group – a collaboration of regional councils committed to delivering sustainable and cost-effective waste solutions.

This long-term vision lays the groundwork for innovation, partnership, and improved outcomes in waste management across the Narrabri Shire.
