Safe disposal protects everyone
Used needles, syringes and other sharps need to be handled and disposed of carefully to protect the health and safety of our community, waste and recycling workers, and the environment.
Incorrect disposal, such as placing sharps in household or public bins, can cause serious injury. Please use the appropriate disposal points provided across the Narrabri Shire.
What are sharps?
Sharps are items designed to cut or pierce the skin, including:
- Needles and syringes
- Lancets (finger prickers)
- Insulin pen needles
- Intravenous giving sets and scalpel blades
These items are often used by people managing medical conditions, caring for animals, or working in health-related fields.
How to dispose of sharps safely
When at home:
- Place sharps in a puncture-resistant container, ideally a yellow medical sharps container, available from most pharmacies. A sturdy plastic bottle with a secure lid (such as a detergent bottle) can also be used in the short term.
- Keep the container secure and store it out of reach of children and pets.
- When full, seal the lid tightly and take the container to one of Council’s approved sharps disposal locations.
When out in the community:
- Locate a sharps disposal location near you.
- Use and dispose of your sharp in the sharps disposal bin provided.
