2023 Waste Survey
Narrabri Shire Council want to extend our sincere gratitude to all 299 individuals who took the time to participate in the waste survey.
Your feedback has been invaluable in helping us improve our waste management practices. As such, Council have already begun implementing changes to address some of the issues and opportunities raised.
These include:
- Six of the eight transfer stations have had their opening hours extended. With Council planning to install electronic gates in Wee Waa and Boggabri that allow residents seven-day access.
- A new waste collection contract starts in October 2023. This contract will continue to include the services of Challenge for processing yellow bins and cardboard recycling.
- In line with the new waste collection contract, the bulk waste collection will change commencing October 2023. The bi-annual service is being replaced with an in-house service with collections that can be booked. The frequency of this service will be announced shortly.
- Both a community garden (organics processing) and a buy-back centre are planned for the shire.
- Council has investigated additional receptacles for container deposit items. Unfortunately, our area is not large enough for additional sites.
- Tyres have been sent for reprocessing for over a decade, which will continue.
- The Maules Creek transfer station has received an additional skip bin for recycling and a lower bin for easier access.
- Larger general waste and recycling bins for residents are available through Council.
The input provided by the community is critical in guiding the council's decision-making process, and the survey results will be incorporated into the Narrabri Shire Council's Waste Management Strategy, which is under development.
We will continue to address the concerns raised in the survey by seeking grants and implementing measures to improve our waste management practices.
