Waste
Narrabri Waste Management Facility
December 2025 was extremely busy with 11,000 tonnes received onsite and 3,861 vehicles/trucks over the weighbridge.
This busy period was managed extremely well by Council's Waste Coordinator and the team, which included cross-team coverage to assist over the holiday period as well as coordinating contractor and internal machinery breakdowns.
Transfer stations
- Due to truck breakdowns and contamination of recycling and placing rubbish on hardstand areas, transfer stations were overfull requiring their closures. Council's road's truck was utilised during holiday period to maintain these facilities.
- Sims Metal is continuing scrap metal pickup.
Waste data for December 2025
- Net weight: 10,731 tonnes
- Transactions completed: 3,861

Latest PFAS test results
The latest testing results of the Namoi Reservoir have shown PFAS levels as below current guidelines
- PFHxS: 2 ng/L (below guideline of 30 ng/L)
- PFOS: 3 ng/L (below guideline of 8 ng/L)
- PFOA & PFBS: Not detected
This means that the Narrabri town water supply continues to be safe for consumption.
The Tibbereena Street bore continues to supplement water supplied from the Elizabeth Street bore (the latest testing of the Elizabeth Street bore showed no detection of PFAS).
The Killarney bore remains switched off after testing in early July last year showed Namoi Reservoir levels slightly above current guidelines.
Read more about the latest testing results.
Portable water treatment plant
Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the portable treatment plant project are currently being advertised and will be received up until 2.00pm Monday, 19 January 2026.
The purpose of the EOI is to identify capable contractors who can deliver a compliant, efficient and cost-effective PFAS water treatment solution that meets current and future community needs.
Tenders will then be invited in March 2026 for the project to commence from June 2026.
Council will advise the community regarding a detailed timeline for the project upon successful selection of the tender.
EPA Bore Screening Program
As part of a statewide inquiry into per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) conducted private groundwater bore testing in the Narrabri Shire, with Narrabri Shire Council acting as a facilitator for registrations of interest.
Groundwater samples were collected in May and November 2025 from private bores registered with interest for the program through the Narrabri Shire Council website.
Testing summary:
- Samples were collected from 122 private bores across 119 properties.
- PFAS were not detected above the Australian Drinking Water Guideline at any property.
- PFAS were detected at levels below the Australian Drinking Water Guideline at 12 properties.
Further information and detailed results are available from the NSW EPA website.
