School Holiday Fun Across Narrabri Shire

Families across the Narrabri Shire can look forward to a packed program of activities these school holidays, with Narrabri Shire Council delivering a range of affordable and accessible options for all ages.

From creative workshops and high-energy youth events to outdoor experiences and extended pool access, there is something happening right across the shire.

Mayor Darrell Tiemens said Council is focused on making school holidays easy, enjoyable and accessible for local families.

“It’s important to Council that we provide local activities that are affordable, engaging and easy to access,” Mayor Tiemens said.

“This program is all about giving young people and families opportunities to get out, try something new and enjoy what we have right here in our community.”

Crossing Theatre School Holiday Program

The Crossing Theatre will host a variety of activities throughout the holidays, catering to both younger children and youth.

Kicking off the program, the Clarence Valley Orchestra, hosted by the Rotary Club of Narrabri, will deliver an unforgettable evening on Wednesday 8 April. Featuring a full orchestra and internationally acclaimed soprano Mirusia, it promises to be a special event for the whole family.

Creative sessions for ages 5–12 will run across multiple days, featuring craft activities such as bracelet making and flower making. Sessions are $10 per child, with limited spaces available.

Youth Week celebrations will include a free laser tag experience in the auditorium, delivered by NDCAS, with a dedicated youth day for ages 12–24 on Tuesday 14 April, followed by a community day for younger participants on Wednesday 15 April.

Young people can also enjoy a free Youth Week movie screening on Wednesday 15 April, also delivered by NDCAS, with popcorn and a drink included.

“We’re fortunate to have organisations like NDCAS working in our community, and Council values the opportunity to partner with them to deliver engaging activities for our young people,” Cr Tiemens said.

Rounding out the program, the Questacon Science Circus will bring a pop-up science centre to Narrabri on Thursday 16 April, offering more than 30 hands-on exhibits and interactive science shows for all ages.

“The Crossing Theatre program is a great example of the variety on offer, from creative activities through to high-energy and educational experiences,” Cr Tiemens said.

“It’s about creating spaces where young people can connect, have fun and make the most of their holidays.”

NarraBRIGHT and Visitor Experiences

Running alongside the school holiday program, NarraBRIGHT will light up the town from 5pm on Friday 10 April with light projections, interactive zones, market stalls, food vendors, entertainment, and so much more.

Several unique, locally delivered activities will also be happening, helping people make the most of their NarraBRIGHT weekend.

Step behind the scenes of the region’s cotton industry with a Guided Cotton Farm Tour on Friday 10 April, departing from the Narrabri Region Visitor Information Centre.

Those looking to explore the natural landscape can take part in guided nature strolls through the Nandewar Ranges, running on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 April.

For a more immersive experience, the Fish Farm Tour and Breakfast Bundle offers a guided tour, breakfast by the water and a cultural performance, running across Friday 10 and Saturday 11 April, with limited places available.

Mayor Tiemens added, “while these additional experiences showcase our region to those visiting, they are also the perfect opportunity for locals to reconnect with some of the great offerings our region has.”

Library Activities

Narrabri Shire Libraries will host a range of free activities these school holidays, including Nature Detective Walks, a Robot War, notebook making workshops, wind spinner decorating, and free kids movies.

Families can enjoy a free screening of The Legend of Ochi, showing at Narrabri Library on Wednesday 8 April and Wee Waa Library on Thursday 9 April, both commencing at 3pm.

Nature Detective Walks offer a great opportunity to explore local natural environments while learning about citizen science. Walks will be held at Wee Waa Lagoon on Tuesday 7 April at 10am and along Narrabri Creek on Monday 13 April at 2pm.

Tuesday 14 April will see a full day of workshops across Wee Waa and Boggabri. In Wee Waa, kids can build and drive robots before competing in a Robot Plank War, or take part in a hands-on A5 notebook making workshop. In Boggabri, a ‘decorate a wind spinner’ workshop will run from 1.30pm to 2.30pm.

The wind spinner workshop will also be held in Narrabri on Wednesday 15 April.

Pool Season Extended

Council has also extended the summer pool season to ensure families can continue to enjoy local facilities during the holidays.

All Narrabri Shire Council pools, which would normally close in early April, will remain open until Saturday, 18 April.

“Extending the pool season means families have even more options to stay active and enjoy the warmer weather,” Cr Tiemens said.

“Whether it’s a day at the pool, a visit to the library or an activity at the theatre, there’s plenty happening across the shire.”
